Student Orientation Assistant

## Position Overview
DUTIES AND EXPECTATIONS:
The function of the Orientation Assistant (OA) position is to serve as a member of the Office of First-Year Experience staff and work toward the goal of assisting new students with their academic, social and personal transition to the University of Kansas. Orientation Assistants provide information about university policies, procedures, services, campus facilities, student activities and academic departments. OAs provide new students an opportunity to connect with current KU students and foster intellectual engagement.
Orientation Assistants initiate and develop positive relationships and maintain open communication with students and guests at orientation programs and throughout students? first year at KU. They facilitate small groups of incoming students and familiarize new students with the diverse communities that make up the university. Orientation Assistants are expected to work Orientation, Hawk Week, Learning Communities and Common Book programs. Additional work days are required for training events and programs.
Orientation Assistants serve as a resource and acquaint new students to Office of First-Year Experience programs including First-Year Seminars, UNIV 101, Learning Communities, KU Common Book and other programs designed to challenge and support first-year students. OAs also perform administrative tasks and duties deemed necessary to support First-Year Experience and its programs.
TIME COMMITMENT:
Spring 2017
Weekly Spring Training Sessions: Wednesdays 4-6 pm, beginning March 29
Spring Transfer Orientation: April 8
Summer 2017
Summer Training: May 22 ? June 9 (40 hours per week)
Orientation: June 12 ? July 28 (30 hours per week)
August Training: Aug. 7 and 8
August Orientation and Hawk Week: Aug. 14-26 (TBD)
Fall 2017
Learning Community (8-12 hours per week)
Orientation Assistant Recruitment: Oct. and Nov. 2017 (TBD)
Transfer Orientation: Nov. 10 (half-day program)
Spring 2018
2018 Spring Orientation: Jan. 10
2018 Spring Open Enrollment: Jan. 11
2018 Transfer Orientation: April 13 (half-day program) and 14
Orientation Assistants may be assigned to mentor students in a Learning Community for the fall semester (2017). Assignments will be based on summer performance evaluations. Those assigned to Learning Communities will develop the specific role with the faculty instructor. Typical duties involve attending class, holding office hours, participating in and/or leading discussion and attending co-curricular programming. OAs support instructors in teaching and facilitating lessons and interacting with students in and outside of the classroom.

## Required Qualifications
1. Hold undergraduate student standing (sophomore, junior or senior status by fall 2017)
2. Completed 15 credit hours at the University of Kansas at the end of the fall 2016 semester (preferred 3.0 GPA or higher)
3. Enrolled for spring semester 2017 (minimum 12 hours) by time of hiring.
4. Available summer 2017 (no classes, jobs, or time away from orientation sessions without prior approval), Hawk Week and throughout the fall semester for mentorship in learning communities
## Preferred Qualifications
1. Understand and support the goals and philosophies of the Office of First-Year Experience
2. Desire to mentor new students and an openness to sharing personal experiences with students
3. Effective communication, organizational and time management skills

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
