POOL: America Reads Elementary School Tutor (Student Work Study)

## Position Overview
America Reads tutors provide personalized support to students in need of extra reading/literacy practice/instruction in the Lawrence Public Schools (USD 497) elementary sites designated as Title 1. To receive this designation at least 50% of a school's students must receive free or reduced lunch. Generally, the students receiving tutoring are in Kindergarten through grade five.
## Job Description
Tutoring activities include, but are not limited to, reading aloud to students, providing students a chance to practice reading, and facilitating activities to improve specific skills such as fluency and comprehension in reading/literacy. Tutors work with the elementary student's teacher to develop lesson plans or facilitate experiences that meet the needs of their student. Aside from tutoring, tutors should also seek to be positive role models providing students with the encouragement and support needed to improve each student's self-confidence and interest in reading/literacy. To promote progress in reading, tutors keep a regular tutoring schedule with students and maintaining consistent communication with teachers.
## Required Qualifications
1. Tutors MUST qualify for and accept Federal Work Study to become a tutor.
2. KU student must be enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours each semester during the academic year. Enrollment of one credit hour during the summer session is required if the student was not enrolled the previous spring or is not pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall term.
3. Tutors MUST have transportation to and from area schools -- some schools are on the KU and Lawrence bus routes.
## Preferred Qualifications
1. Experience with Children in schools, camp, or other settings.
2. Interest and passion for working with children in Kindergarten through grade five.
3. Self-motivation and desire to go "above and beyond" to promote student learning.
4. Responsibility and personal accountability for completing tasks; attention to details and deadlines.
5. Elementary or Middle/Secondary Education major.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
