Microsemi's Aviation Centre of Excellence in Ennis Ireland is a research and development facility supporting the design, development and manufacturing of Microsemi's new product line of high reliability aviation intelligent power solutions (IPS). As the aviation sector continues to demand higher levels of reliability and integration in the area of power electronics in order to realize the goal of more electric aircraft (MEA), Microsemi's Aviation Centre of Excellence will play a critical role in supporting this objective.
Among the flagship products from this centre is the aviation power core module (PCM) with an integrated FPGA and hybrid power drive (HPD) stage. The PCM controls the electrical motors used in applications such as primary flight control actuation and landing gear systems. It interfaces seamlessly with aircraft power supplies and flight computers, providing vital sensor feedback for monitoring. Customisation options are also available to ensure an optimised product offering for customers.
The aviation team in Ennis are part of the Microsemi Space and Power Management Group (SPM) who specialise in the design and manufacture of standard and custom power conversion products for high reliability applications. Microsemi SPM takes the approach of providing complete sub-system level power solutions for our customers. Our primary market is in flight critical commercial aviation systems and other high reliability applications such as Space systems. We see ourselves as partners to our customers and define and provide differentiated solutions that address system and sub-system level challenges. We place great emphasis on validated solutions that work right the first time.
We have a number of key Engineering positions in our aviation Ennis based design team for Intelligent Power Solutions. This position executes power system electrical design and development.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
Define new technology roadmaps for future SPM power systems.
Design electrical motor Power Drive Electronics (PDE) systems; understanding and considering sources, loads and standard space and aviation electrical power quality.
Simulate the electrical behaviour of the power drive electronics system.
Design and implement electrical motor power drive electronics.
Calculate the power losses in a PDE.
Evaluate, design and implement the most appropriate power conversion topology to meet the application requirements.
Analyse requirements for proposals, develop winning solution concepts and present results in a clear and convincing style in technical sections of proposals.
Design to cost.
Follow the V-diagram of a system development.
Solve customer application problems and technical issues relating to power conversion.
Conduct performance evaluations on new power IC devices, including making a determination as to what to test and how to perform the tests.
Liaise with Component and Reliability Engineers to select the appropriate components while maintaining exceptional reliability and pursuing reduction in cost of production.
Perform failure mode and effect analysis to identify components that pose excessive failure risks and propose appropriate mitigation design changes.
Advise on designs to achieve compliance to requirements, reliability and manufacturability. Act as an independent reviewer on design compliance.
Review engineering specifications and drawings, propose design modifications to improve reliability within cost and other performance requirements.
Support new product proposals and proposals to modify existing products.
Take on other engineering duties as required and assigned.
Support in-house training programmes as required.
Travel internationally on occasion as requested.
Requirements / Essential Skills / Attributes
Electrical or Electronic Engineering degree required. MSc. or MEng. is preferable.
MBA or equivalent desirable.
Minimum of 15 years' experience in high reliability power electronics environment, preferably in space or aviation applications.
Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite and electrical design analysis software.
Must possess a record of achievement in power supply product development.
Strong experience in Space and / or Aviation power distribution system design preferable.
Must possess proven ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Candidate must have exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
Candidate must have excellent attention to detail and Technical Writing skills.
Requires the ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organisation.
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Strong ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams and interface well with peers and management in a corporate setting.
Excellent time management skills.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
