POOL – Online Lecturer and/or Course Designer
The Department of Anthropology at the University of Kansas is seeking qualified individuals to submit application materials to be placed in a pool for consideration as the teaching needs of our department arise for part- to full-time online lecturer positions to develop and/or serve as instructors in one or more online course(s). We are specifically seeking individuals who are qualified at teaching in an online environment. Online lecturers are untenured, non-tenure-track members of the faculty. Appointments are typically short in duration over a defined time period associated with the development and/or instruction of one or more online course(s). The primary role is online instruction with no obligations to perform research or service. Appointment dates will vary based on the required time frame for course preparation and/or instruction. Generally, the appointments will be temporary.
Application materials will be reviewed by the faculty and placed in a pool for consideration for developing and/or teaching undergraduate or graduate courses in anthropology consistent with departmental instructional needs.
The successful candidate must have appropriate authorization to work in the U.S. before employment begins. Job Description Duties (Online Lecturer):
100% - Teach a specified number of either undergraduate or graduate courses per semester.
Develop and modify appropriate online materials in conjunction with the staff of the KU Center for Online and Distance Learning (CODL) and in accordance with current College standards.
Teach one or more undergraduate or graduate online courses per semester. Provide instruction for one or more online course(s), generally in an 8-week, minimester format. Class meetings will generally be asynchronous, but instructional expectations match those of the face-to-face experience.
Administer assignments, tests, evaluate student work, provide timely feedback to students, and assign grades.
Provide students with systematic, synchronous and asynchronous online instruction and interaction. Provide timely feedback in an appropriate online course format with occasions for online office hours and/or interactive Q&A sessions. Office hours may include a set time where students can contact the instructor, but must also include expectations for timely responses to student inquiries outside of a set contact time.
Be available online for students involved in classes taught. Regular, weekly interaction is expected in accordance with student credit hours for one or more course(s).
Adhere to Department, College and University policies.
Duties (Online Course Developer):
100% - Build an online course for the unit and/or the College Online Programs.
Develop appropriate online course materials in conjunction with the staff of the KU Center for Online and Distance Learning (CODL) and in accordance with current College standards.
Work in a collaborative environment, utilizing the advice, expertise, and critiques of other major instructors in the Department of Anthropology and appropriate units in the College.
Observe and adhere to the policies and procedures for online course development, including respect for intellectual property.
Complete the course design process within a specific deadline to ensure the course is fully designed and reviewed according to quality standards prior to the date the course is to be offered, as determined by the CODL and the Department.
Required Qualifications Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through (1) descriptions of work experience and educational experiences in letter of application, (2) record of accomplishments and productivity addressed in C.V., and (3) information provided from professional references.
M.A. in Anthropology or a closely related field for teaching undergraduate level courses, OR a Ph.D. in Anthropology required for teaching graduate level courses.
Experience in teaching, as either a primary instructor or a graduate teaching assistant in at least one semester of a college-level course (either face-to-face or online).
Demonstrated expertise on the topic of instruction.
Preferred Qualifications
Ph.D. or ABD in Anthropology.
Experience in developing and/or teaching online courses.
Experience in teaching multiple semesters of college-level undergraduate courses.
Experience in teaching the specific introductory course to be assigned.
