POOL – Online Lecturer and/or Course Designer
The African/African American Studies Department invites qualified scholars and professionals to apply for part- to full-time online lecturer positions for the development and/or instruction of online courses. Online lecturers are untenured, non-tenure-track members of the faculty. Appointments are typically short in duration over a defined time period associated with the development and/or instruction of online course(s). Primary role is online instruction with no obligations to perform research or service. The appointment dates will vary based on the timeframe for the preparation and instruction of the online course(s). Generally the appointments will be temporary.
Application materials will be reviewed by the faculty and placed in a pool for consideration for developing and/or teaching language courses and/or non-language courses that is consistent with departmental instructional needs.
The successful candidate must have appropriate authorization to work in the U.S. before employment begins. Job Description Duties (Online Lecturer):
100% - Teach a specified number of either undergraduate or graduate courses per semester.
Prepare for and attend all class meetings. Provide timely feedback and instructor/student interaction in asynchronous online course format with occasions for online office hours and/or Q&A sessions. Regular weekly interaction is expected in online courses.
Provide instruction for course(s). Classes are generally in an 8-week or mini-semester format. Class meetings will generally be asynchronous, but instructional expectations match those of the face-to-face experience.
Administer assignments, tests, evaluate student work, provide timely feedback to students, and assign grades.
Be available for students involved in classes taught. Office hours may include a set time where students can contact the instructor, but must also include expectations for timely responses to student inquiries outside of a set contact time.
Adhere to departmental, college and university policies.
Duties (Online Course Developer):
100% - Build an online course for the unit and/or the College Online Programs.
Design the course in accordance with departmental guidance and KU standards, which include working with instructional design staff in the Center for Online and Distance Learning.
Work in a collaborative environment, utilizing the expertise of the other major instructors in the program, unit, or center.
Complete the course design process within a specific deadline to ensure the course is fully designed and quality reviewed prior to the date the course is to be offered, as determined by the academic department.
Required Qualifications Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through (1) descriptions of work experience and educational experiences in letter of application, (2) record of accomplishments and productivity addressed in C.V., and (3) information provided from professional references.
Required qualifications for Non-Language courses
A minimum of a Master's Degree in a discipline relevant to the undergraduate course(s) of interest, OR a terminal degree in a discipline relevant to graduate-level course(s) of interest.
Demonstrated background and knowledge in the African and/or African-American course of interest.
Required qualifications for Language courses
A minimum of a Master's Degree in the respective language or languages,OR two (2) or more years of distinguished teaching experience at the post-secondary level in the respective language or languages.
Demonstrated near-native or native language ability, and knowledge of the culture(s) where the respective language is spoken.
A consistent record of participation in professional development in the languages (e.g., workshops, certificate programs, etc.), plus a record of research and publication that, in the aggregate, substantially meets the equivalent training that would be equivalent to an M.A. or Ph.D. program designed for instructors in the languages; AND/OR an extensive record of professional experience as a practitioner of language instruction.
Preferred Qualifications Preferred Qualifications for Non-Language Courses
J.D. or Doctorate in a discipline relevant to the course(s) of interest.
Five (5) or more years of distinguished teaching experience at post-secondary level; evidence of prior success in teaching at the post-secondary level (e.g., course evaluations or supervisor ratings).
Practical field experience in area-specific culture.
Expertise with online instructional technologies, as evidenced by application materials.
Preferred Qualifications for Language Courses
Doctorate in the respective language or languages.
Five (5) or more years of distinguished teaching experience in the languages at the post-secondary level.
Evidence of prior success in teaching at the post-secondary level (e.g., course evaluations or supervisor ratings).
Expertise with online instructional technologies, as evidenced by application materials.
